ABOUT THE ARTIST

David’s work is life in its truest form: where birth and decay mingle together in an ironic symphony.  His is a work where rich organic forms, and even living organisms, are naturally intertwined with decaying industrial relics of corroded metal and glass.  He uses and re-uses industrial materials in stunningly organic ways, reminding jaded urbanites of our collective umbilical cord that is forever nourished by natural world.  By blending past and present, David illuminates the intersection of our transient, high-paced society with nature’s eternal miracle of catharsis and rebirth.

I know the source of his inspiration because it is also my own.  Together, David and I shared our mother’s womb and were mostly inseparable for 18 years.  We grew up in a large, old house and verdant backyard of sycamore, oak, raspberries, honeysuckle, and milkweed.  David was intensely aware of his surroundings.  Obsessed with the movement and patterns of myriad insects, later the fractal patterns and curves of plants, and the comforting hues of the light that sustains them; it is these forms that he mystically simplifies into their raw essence through photography and design.

Like all adults, we were hastily jolted out of Eden and swept up into the quick current of our society, too often trading youthful reverence for industrial productivity.  Apart from the richly flavorful, aesthetic beauty, I cannot ignore the subtle aftertaste of nostalgia that accompanies his art - an emotional attachment to these old things and the ever-satisfying drug of awakening intensely visceral childhood memories in a rapidly changing existence. [Under this lens, repurposing is almost an act of celebrating the juvenile wonderment in all of us that confers beauty to all things.]  Open up all of your senses when appreciating his work and you might detect a hint of your own brilliant childhood.

David Nebert is a functional artist with a Bachelors of Science degree in Industrial Design from DAAP in 2009.  He has worked in collaboration to further his ideals for the intersection of design and art: He formed RESproducts with two friends to design, make, and sell their own product designs and crafts.  Works from RES can be found in Fabricate in Northside, Cincinnati, a retail and art space for local designers, crafters, and artists.  More venues for sale of RES works will be shared soon.  In 2010, he formed Elna and Ei with Fashion Design graduate, Milan DelVecchio.  This collaboration has allowed David to explore the union of fiber arts, illustration, and product design.  A lighting prototype was created from this exploration which shows a stunning glimpse of a much larger installation concept in the works.  Images of Elna and Ei can be found on the below listed website.  David and Milan still collaborate on projects when time and space permits, but focus primarily on seeking art grants to fund their pursuits.  2011 has heralded the start of David’s most recent activites in entrepreneurship with ( e i ) design.  ( e i ) has its roots in Elna and Ei, and will embody his personal works.  David is also mastering the art of referring to himself in 3rd person.

( e i ) design

With reuse, repurposing, and restoration in mind, ( e i ) seeks to create works that embody
simple, natural, and raw aesthetics. Inspiration and materials are sought from the natural
world and antique, vintage, industrial sources.

This website will be utilized to display these works and to provide a window on inspirations and developments of his creative pursuits.  He seeks to inspire by exhibiting ideas, works, and images from wherever he reaches on the internet and in his daily explorations.
